Firebirds still learning to depend on O-line

? Free State High football coach Bob Lisher doesn’t mean to put any pressure on certain parts of his team.

But he does know who needs to be on their game tonight when the Firebirds take on Olathe East at the Olathe District Activities Center.

“Our offensive line,” Lisher said. “They have to have one big-time night on Friday.”

He’s right. And if last week is any indication how tonight will go in the trenches, Lisher surely will be satisfied.

The Firebirds-Hawks kickoff will be at 7 tonight at ODAC, with a live radio broadcast on KLWN 1320 AM.

The Firebirds’ offensive line — notably Ryan Gore, Tyler Morgan, Jeremy Bustamante, Mark Case and Phillip Weinmaster — was fabulous in Free State’s 23-14 victory last week over Shawnee Mission West. The line created big holes for the running game and offered enough protection to let senior Caleb Harvey pass for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

Almost all of Harvey’s yardage — 104, to be exact — was to senior Dain Dillingham, who caught everything he got his hands on.

Still, Harvey’s accuracy was a big reason for Free State’s victory last week. Even if he won’t admit it.

“Dain’s an easy target,” Harvey shrugged. “He’ll grab about anything I throw up there. I have the easy job.”

Tonight, no Firebird has an easy job. Olathe East (3-0) is the second-ranked team in Class 6A, and feature explosive weapons at the offensive skilled positions, as well as enormous offensive and defensive lines. Both lines are led by senior Todd Haselhorst, who has orally committed to Kansas University.

But who Haselhorst is blocking for might be the one that causes problems. Olathe East running back Andre Jones, in three weeks, has four rushing touchdowns on 478 yards, tops in the Sunflower League. Complementing him is senior wide receiver Anthony Parks, who’s caught 16 balls for 224 receiving yards, second in the league to Dillingham’s 269.

Last week, the Hawks had 10 completions for 134 yards in their 23-15 victory over Lawrence High. All of them were to Parks.

“Our secondary has to be aware of where Parks is at all times,” Lisher said.

Still, the Firebirds like their chances if everything is clicking. They did go nine straight quarters without allowing a point earlier in the season, and the offensive attack against SM West was mixed up nearly to perfection.

“If we play hard and with good intensity,” Lisher said, “we’ll have the opportunity to be in the game.”
