Baker to mark homecoming

1983 undefeated team to be honored this weekend

A parade, competitions and ceremony honoring Baker University’s 1983 football team will mark the university’s Homecoming festivities this week.

The tradition-filled week culminates with a 2 p.m. football game Saturday against MidAmerica Nazarene.

“They’ve been doing a lot of these things 20 or more years,” said Susan Hoffman, director of student activities.

About 20 entries are expected for this year’s Homecoming parade, which begins at 6 p.m. today at the corner of Eighth and Grove streets and circles campus. The parade was brought back last year after being dropped in the 1970s.

Students already have been in the Homecoming spirit this week with competitions. Teams of students have been participating in the annual Knowledge Bowl, Baker Olympics and Skit Night.

“It’s a lot of honor to walk away with the win,” Hoffman said.

Alumni will gather for a Homecoming luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Harter Union.

The university will induct three new members of its Hall of Fame — Dick Shores, a 1950s football standout; Emmalie Gessner Cowherd, softball and basketball coach from 1976 to 1983; and Brent Wright, a football starter and track athlete who graduated in 1971.

Baker’s 1983 football team, which was undefeated at 10-0, will be recognized during the luncheon.
