Morton services

Memorial services for Walter Monroe Morton, 80, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private inurnment will be later.

Mr. Morton died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 30, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Clark O. Sr. and Hazel H. (Colvin) Morton. After several moves, he settled in Lawrence in 1939, where he went to high school.

Mr. Morton served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England, Africa and Italy during World War II. He and his father and brother began Morton Building Materials, which served the Lawrence area for more than 50 years. He retired in 1985. He was a member of Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 American Legion, Lawrence Masonic Lodge No. 6 AF&AM and a lifetime member of the Sertoma Club. He was a past president of the Kansas Concrete Masonry Assn., served on the board of directors of the National Concrete Masonry Assn. and was a former member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

He was one of the original property owners and leaders of the Lone Star Lake Assn. He also was involved in the planning process for Eagle Bend Golf Course.

He married Gloria Fungaroli on March 26, 1949, in Northampton, Mass. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a brother, Beverly Chauncey Morton, Lawrence, and 15 nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to American Heart Assn. or National Kidney Foundation of Kansas, sent in care of the mortuary.
