Whittemore escapes injury

KU quarterback says he's fine after deck collapse

Kansas University football quarterback Bill Whittemore was among the attendees at a postgame party at a Lawrence apartment where the second-story porch collapsed.

More than 20 people were believed to have been on the deck when it fell about 1 a.m. Sunday, or only a few hours after Kansas had thumped Jacksonville State, 41-6, at Memorial Stadium. No one was reported seriously injured in the collapse.

Whittemore was reluctant to talk about the incident during Tuesday’s KU football media session, and it wasn’t clear whether he was on the porch when it collapsed or if he was inside the apartment.

According to sources, most of the football players at the party were inside watching a replay of the KU-Jacksonville State game on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6.

Asked if he was hurt when the deck fell, Whittemore replied tersely: “No …we’re good.”

Whittemore, a 6-foot-0, 205-pound senior from Brentwood, Tenn., has led the Jayhawks to three straight victories. In this week’s NCAA statistics, he is ranked No. 2 among Division I-A quarterbacks in passing efficiency.

Kevin Long, a KU quarterback who is not listed on the depth chart, rents the apartment. Long, who was a ballyhooed recruit of former KU coach Terry Allen, is a fourth-year junior from Iowa City, Iowa.

Neighbors estimated about 60 people were at the party, including many KU student-athletes. Two of the athletes — tennis player Courtney Steinbrock and softball player Lindsey Weinstein — suffered reported minor injuries when the deck, which was about 12 feet from the ground, went down.

KU coach Mark Mangino did not mention the incident during his regular Tuesday media session.
