Reno criticizes Patriot Act

The federal Patriot Act goes too far in restricting civil liberties, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno told reporters Tuesday morning.

Reno is at Kansas University to speak with law students and hold a public lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lied Center.

She said two aspects of President Bush’s post-Sept. 11 anti-terror policies especially concerned her — the ability of agents to review library records and their ability to detain terror suspects indefinitely without giving them rights traditionally given to criminal suspects.

“For citizens in the United States to be held in those circumstances, it represents to me an erosion of the civil liberties we hold dear,” Reno said.

Reno, 65, served eight years as attorney general under President Bill Clinton.

All vouchers have been distributed for the Lied Center lecture, but doors will be opened to those without vouchers at 7:20 p.m. if there are seats available.
