Jayhawks bash Buffs

KU's aces doom Colorado in 3-0 win

Kansas University’s volleyball team didn’t need an ace up its sleeve Saturday. The Jayhawks had enough aces on the court.

KU used 12 service aces in a 3-0 defeat of Colorado at Horejsi Center. KU earned its first match sweep, 30-24, 30-28, 30-25, of the Buffaloes since 1986.

“It was all about our service game today,” said KU coach Ray Bechard, whose team improved to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

Senior Abbie Jacobson, who had three aces, credited KU’s serving prowess to lots of practice.

“You can’t necessarily practice acing somebody, but we practice every day on our serving drills,” Jacobson said. “We’ll make up game situations, where it’s 29-27 and we need a serve for the win. I think it prepares us for game situations.”

Jacobson broke open a 15-all tie in the first game with an ace down the line, and the Jayhawks served four more perfect shots in a 30-24 victory.

Colorado was ahead in the second game when KU freshman Janaina Correa’s ace cut KU’s deficit to 28-27. Correa added a second straight ace, but sophomore Josi Lima was called for a net violation.

It didn’t matter. KU took the lead, then Correa corralled the win with a kill down the middle.

“I think for our team, our serves are the most important part,” said Correa, whose powerful jump serve created four aces. “Yesterday we worked so hard on practicing our serves, and it really paid off today.”

Kansas University's Jill Dorsey celebrates match point against Colorado. The Jayhawks beat the Buffaloes, 3-0, Saturday at Horejsi Center.

Colorado coach Pi’i Aiu said the second-game comeback by KU killed the Buffaloes’ momentum.

“They did a real good job of pressuring us at the end of games,” Aiu said after the Buffs fell to 9-3 and 1-1. “I thought we had game two won. We were up 26-24, and it took us three swings to get a side out, and almost by then it was over. They did the same thing late in game three.”

KU overcame a 7-1 CU spurt with four straight points in a 30-25 victory.

Five Jayhawks had seven or more kills: Correa led KU with 11, junior Ashley Michaels tallied 10, Lima had nine, senior Sarah Rome eight and junior Lindsey Morris seven.

“I thought Morris had one of the better matches, and we need that from Lindsey,” Bechard said. “Janaina had no hitting errors, and she had been struggling a little on her hitting.”

Bechard’s daughter, Ashley, had 34 assists at setter.

“Abbie Jacobson came in, and (Jill) Dorsey played well on the back row,” KU coach Bechard said. “I thought Ashley Bechard did very well, and we used Andi (Rozum) a little bit. … It’s going to be a good evening now.”
