Thomas’ kick lifts Baldwin
Gardner ? Baldwin High’s Caleb Thomas kicked a 29-yard field goal with four minutes left Friday night, giving the Bulldogs a 19-16 football victory over Gardner-Edgerton.
Baldwin had struggled with turnovers in the first two weeks of the season and lost three more in the first half. The Trailblazers took advantage and led 16-3 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs (2-1) held on to the ball and shut down Gardner-Edgerton’s offense.
“We came out and played our best half of the year,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “We didn’t turn the ball over and really made Gardner work for their yards instead of giving them a short field. We finally came out and fixed our mistakes and played good fundamental football. I’m proud of the kids for coming back.”
Micah Mason scored two second-half touchdowns to rally BHS. Baldwin’s Emery Baughn had made a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter, but he missed an extra-point attempt after Mason’s second TD in the fourth.
Berg sent Thomas in for the winning kick.
“Both those kids do a good job for us,” Berg said.

Ottawa 24, Paola 14
Paola — Ottawa recovered from a shaky first half in a victory over Paola.
The host Panthers scored on two big plays — Jordan Karr’s 25-yard interception return and Donald Smith’s 42-yard run — to take a 14-7 halftime lead, but Paola didn’t score again after halftime.
“We played a much better second half,” Ottawa coach Pat Boeh said. “We established the running game to some degree, and defensively we tightened up and stopped theirs.”
The Cyclones (3-0) took the lead in the fourth quarter on Caleb Mitchell’s 32-yard field goal.
Ottawa sealed the deal with an eight-minute, 80-yard drive that was capped by Jason Houston’s five-yard TD run with 1:22 remaining.
