First Church of the Nazarene

First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road, will have its third annual homemade chicken-and-noodle dinner from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 4.

Meals will include chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and dessert. Hot dog plates will be available for children. Suggested donation is $5 for adults, $3 for children.

The dinner is being held in conjunction with the church’s third annual car show, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with entertainment from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Car show is free.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, will give its Mike Funston Volunteer Award to this year’s recipient at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The congregation also will learn about the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. in Lawrence, as well as the status of the Ecumenical Habitat for Humanity house that the church is helping to build.

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church’s Bloodmobile will be open from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 946 Vt. Walk-ins are welcome.

The annual Dad and Lad Night, sponsored by the United Methodist Men, will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Brady Hall. Carl Brooks, former American Legion baseball coach, will be the featured speaker.

Heartland Community Church

Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt., will show the Academy Award-nominated short documentary “Leo Beuerman” at the 11 a.m. Sunday service.

The film, produced in 1969 by Centron Films in Lawrence, chronicles the life of Leo Beuerman, a lifelong resident who used to sell pencils from a handmade cart on Massachusetts Street.

A plaque honoring Beuerman is on the sidewalk in front of Teller’s restaurant, 746 Mass.

The Rev. Paul Gray, Heartland’s pastor, will talk about his relationship with Beuerman as part of the church’s fall series, “Let’s Go to the Movies.”

Living Water Church of Lawrence

Living Water Church of Lawrence, which meets at the Lawrence Visitor Center, 402 N. Second St., welcomes Mary Ann and Ron Adams to speak at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

The couple are the founders and pastors of Shekinah Glory and Mercy International Ministries, based in the state of Washington.

Martha & Mary’s Way

A benefit recital for Martha & Mary’s Way, a ministry to women in Lawrence, will be 7:30 p.m. Friday in the sanctuary of Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St.

The recital will feature soprano Kathrin Steinbacher, a graduate student in voice at Kansas University.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Harold Washington, a professor at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo., will lead a Bible study at 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the Heritage Room of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The forum will look at the question, “What Does the New Testament Say about Homosexuality?”

A new member orientation class will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28, and new church members will join during worship services Oct. 19. Those interested in joining the church may call Kay Cerny at 843-3220.

The church will be the host of the meeting of the Eastern Association of the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference Sept. 28.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

An evening of celebration about the life of St. Clare of Assisi will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

Not as much is known about St. Clare, the feminine mirror of St. Francis, the instrument of peace and brother of the poor. This celebration will offer the opportunity to learn more about her story.

The community is invited to attend this event, which will conclude with a light reception.

Catholic adults preparing for confirmation will meet for the first time in a three-part series Sept. 27, beginning with the 8 a.m. Mass.

Suzanne Lang will sign the Mass and class for hearing-impaired participants.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The children will open the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday worship services with music and liturgical movement at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The church’s small-group ministry begins this month. New groups include: “Jesus: Up Close and Personal”; and “Stressed Out: Keeping Your Cool.”

St. Theresa Catholic Church

St. Theresa Catholic Church of Perry will have its annual bazaar Oct. 5.

A turkey-and-ham dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children. Carry-out dinners will be available.

The event will feature a silent auction, fancy work, baked goods, a cake walk, bingo and children’s games. Raffle tickets to win a TV, quilt, barbecue grill or cash will be sold.

A verbal auction and raffle drawing will be at 3:30 p.m.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The discussion group Forty Good Minutes meets at 9:30 a.m. Sundays at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Michael Shaw, professor of classics at Kansas University, will lead a discussion Sunday on “Greek Myths of Origin (Creation),” the last of the discussions on creation myths.

The Rev. David Kent will preach at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. Kent recently retired as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Kansas.

Zane Wilemon, youth director, has returned from a missionary trip to Africa and will meet with young people from the parish for a dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “The Fall Equinox,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Author Patricia Martin will discuss her book, “A Meadowlark Calling,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Fellowship and coffee hour will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The deacons of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive, will provide a Sunday worship service at 3 p.m. for residents of Presbyterian Manor in the second-floor activity room.

The deacons will have their bimonthly meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall of the church, 1204 Kasold Drive.
