H.F. ‘Fred’ Middleton

? Services for H.F. “Fred” Middleton, 75, Scottsdale, Ariz., will be at 10 a.m. Monday at North Scottsdale United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be later at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Mr. Middleton died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003.

He was born Feb. 23, 1928, in Sheffield, Ala., the son of David and Rose Middleton. He grew up in Shreveport, La., and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from George Washington University.

Mr. Middleton was drafted in 1946 and retired as a colonel after 32 years in the Army. He spent 13 years in Europe and Asia, serving in the Korean War.

He graduated from Army Command and General Staff College, Armed Forces Staff College and Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He received the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star.

He served as director of the Department of Resource Management at the Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was a life member of Alpha Sigma Lambda national scholastic society and Lecompton (Kan.) Historical Society, and a member of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame.

He retired from the Army in 1978 and was a marketing specialist and projects manager for Greyhound until he retired in 1987. He then became a management consultant.

He was president of the Seventh Region of the Association of the U.S. Army and a member of the Association Council of Trustees in Washington, D.C. He was also a regional vice president for the Association of the National Defense Transportation Assn. He received the Biddle Medal for exceptional service from the U.S. Army Assn. in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Bahnmaier, of the home; a daughter, Donna Bates, Shreveport, La.; two brothers, Ralph and John; and six grandchildren.

His first wife, Donna, and a son, Harry, died earlier.

The family suggests memorials to North Scottsdale United Methodist Church, 11735 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 84254; or the U.S. Army Transportation Corps Museum, Fort Eustis, VA 23604-5114.
