Baker’s stout defense expects tough test today

? Baker University’s football team might need another standout defensive performance tonight if it is going to pick up its second straight victory.

While Missouri Valley is only 1-1 this season, the Vikings have scored the second-most points in the 11-team Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Sophomore quarterback Roy Harden, a Cameron, Mo., product, is second in the HAAC in total yards with 499.

On the flip side, the Vikings also have surrendered the most points in the league at 53.

That fact, plus Baker’s stellar defensive showing at home last weekend against Central Methodist College, should give the (1-1) Wildcats a shot at 7 tonight at Gregg-Mitchell Field.

Baker’s offense isn’t quite on the same stat track as the Vikings — who were voted fourth by the HAAC coaches in the preseason, after an 8-2 record last year — but it isn’t exactly defunct.

Baker senior quarterback Martin Updike has thrown for 243 yards and two touchdowns; Wildcat running back Jon Reeves has rushed for 282 yards and another score.
