Jones will start at DT against Jacksonville State

Chuck Jones was listed as the starter at defensive tackle on the depth chart released Thursday by Kansas University.

Jones was injured in the football season opener Aug. 30 against Northwestern and played sparingly the following week against UNLV. He did not play Saturday at Wyoming.

Jones’ return drops senior Sid Bachmann back into a reserve role, and red-shirt freshman Kyle Knighton — who had played tackle while Jones was sidelined — shifted back to end and is listed as junior David McMillan’s backup along with junior John McCoy.

At the other defensive end, sophomore Monroe Weekley and senior Reggie Curry are listed as co-No. 1s. Curry has started two games and Weekley one. Weekley had two sacks Saturday against the Cowboys.

Two other changes were made in the secondary.

Shelton Simmons, who started the first two games at cornerback before being replaced by Remuise Johnson last week, was listed as co-No. 1 with Johnson.

“Both those guys are competing there,” KU coach Mark Mangino said. “They’re both getting better, and they’ll both play.”

Freshman Kenneth Thompson was back at No. 2 at the other corner behind sophomore Donnie Amadi after losing that spot to sophomore Ronnie Amadi a week ago.

Kickoff for the Jacksonville State game is 6 p.m. Saturday.
