The University Bridge Club announces winners of its Sept. 6 game. Virginia Williams, Marian Davis, and Bud and Betty Lukens were hosts.

The blue winners were Al Smith, first; Alice Akins, second; Horace Nelson, third; Henry Wigington, fourth; and Lois Liebert, fifth.

The pink winners were Freddie Nelson, first; Marian Davis, second; Wanda Kring, third; Gini Wigington, fourth; and Mildred Hoffman, fifth.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club played host to a regional tournament, sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League, from Sept. 3 through Sunday. More than 400 players represented 18 states, Mexico and two Canadian provinces. Lawrence resident Eldon Herd attained the rank of Life Master during the tournament.

Local winners in Open Pairs competition Wednesday afternoon included Virginia Seaver and Sandra Stover, first in A; Bruce McKeithan and Freda Gilmore, second in A; Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee, fourth in A; Cathy Blumenfeld and Lois Clark, second in B; and Betty Spalsbury and Robert Anderson, second in C.

Winners in the Open Pairs competition Wednesday evening included Bruce McKeithan and Freda Gilmore, second in A; Jean Otney and Russell LaForce, first in C; and Klee Zaricky and Chris Lane, third in C.

Thursday afternoon competition was led by Chuck Hedges and Yvonne Hedges who placed second in A. Others who placed were Virginia Seaver and Sandra Stover, fifth in A; and Margrete Hartman and Barbara Figgins, third in C.

Russell LaForce and Ilse Steinhardt placed fourth in A during the Open Pairs competition Thursday evening. Virginia Seaver and Sandra Stover placed fifth in A.

Dave Piro and Paul Heitzman placed first in A during Friday afternoon’s Open Pairs competition. Others who placed were Russell LaForce and Lois Clark, second in A; Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell, third in A; Lester Dalton and Julia Dalton, fifth in A; Julia Brooks and Phyllis Brownlee, sixth in A; Margrete Hartman and Barbara Figgins, third in B; and Krishna Saha and Emily Foster, third in C.

Julia Brooks and Phyllis Brownlee placed second in A during Friday evening’s competition. Other winners were Wanda Durbin and Jean Otney, fourth in A; Russell LaForce and Lois Clark, third in B; and Polly Schoning and Bebe Huxtable, second in C.

Sylvia Gauthier and Donna Johnson placed sixth in A during Saturday evening’s Open Pairs competition.

Local players placed in individual events during the six “side” pairs games played during the week. They included Don Brennaman, Michael Blumenfeld, Cathy Blumenfeld, Albert Ballard Jr., Emily Foster, Mona Bell, Judy Bevan, Julie Ward, Donna Johnson, Chris Lane and Klee Zaricky.

There were four separate Knock-Out Teams competitions. The four-day morning session, bracket 2, was won by the team of Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, John Hickey and Patt Radford. The team of Chuck Hedges, Yvonne Hedges, Judy Hildreth and Dianne Childs placed second.

John Hickey, Patt Radford, Steven Day and James Kelley placed third in the “Tiger” Knock-Out Teams, bracket 2. The team of Donna Munson, Blanche Lippman, Janice Hollowell and Patricia Lombardi placed first in bracket 3. The team of Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Mary Joyce and Gary Joyce placed third.

The “Cowboy” Knock-Out Teams, bracket 2, was won by the team of Charles Hedges, Yvonne Hedges, Patt Radford and John Hickey.

Donna Johnson, James Masilamani, Herschel Herring and Raju Sheth placed second in the “X” strata of the Sunday Flight A Swiss competition.

Chris Lane, Klee Zaricky, Cheryl Jackson and Christie Thomas placed second in the C strata of the Flight B Swiss competition. Wanda Durbin, Suzanne Wassmer, Sally Taylor and Betty Collier placed third. The team of Harry Shaffer, James Zhang, Kent McCullough and Clyde Romer placed seventh. Harriett Olson, Artie Shaw, Judy Bevan and John Gilbert placed sixth in the D strata.

Lawrence residents who helped during the tournament were Patt Radford, Chris Lane, Bobbie Figgins, Mary Joyce, Don Brennaman and Julie Ward. Eldon Herd served as tournament chairman.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Seven tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Competing East-West, Olivier Urruty and Harry Shaffer claimed first place. Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough finished second. Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee placed third in A and first in B. Curt Soloff and Chris Lane took second place in B. Bob Anderson and Betty Spalsbury placed first in C.

Playing East-West, Ilse Steinhardt and Russell LaForce finished first in A, B and C. Alice Leitch and Frances Vogel took second in A, B and C. Sally Taylor and Shirlie Vaughn placed third in A.

  • Knights of Columbus Lawrence Council 1372 announced its Knight and Family of the Month for August. Brian Walter was named Knight of the Month. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for one year. Walter helps with landscape upgrade and maintenance, breakfasts and Scouting. He recently accepted the position of inside guard for the council to replace a member who moved to Minnesota.

The Paul Clark family was named Family of the Month. Clark has been a member of the organization for 10 years. Paul, his wife, Pamela, and their children, Jonathan, 10, and David, 5 months, support the Knights of Columbus, Scouting and church functions. Paul is advocate for Council 1372. Paul has previously served as deputy grand knight, grand knight, financial secretary and district deputy. The Clark family organized the club’s annual family picnic in August. Pam is a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
