Free State volleyball wins two of three

Leavenworth — Free State High’s volleyball team opened Sunflower League play by taking two of three matches Thursday night.

In the Firebirds’ first match, they knocked off Shawnee Mission North 28-26, 22-25, 17-14.

“They’re the defending state champs, so it was good to beat them,” FSHS coach Nancy Hopkins said.

Hopkins emptied her bench, which didn’t work in a 25-16, 25-20 loss to Shawnee Mission South.

“We found a lineup that’s working, and that’s the one I’ll probably stick with now that we’re into league play,” she said.

The Firebirds defeated Leavenworth 25-10, 25-14 in their final match.

Free State (4-3 overall, 2-1 league) plays host to Gardner-Edgerton, Olathe South and Shawnee Mission East at 5 p.m. Thursday.
