Fake punt sparks Sooners past Tide

Nebraska knocks off Utah State; Colorado rallies for win against UCLA

? Alabama was rolling, the crowd was in a frenzy and Oklahoma was about to punt.

Just when it looked as if the Crimson Tide was going to take control, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops went into his bag of tricks.

Blake Ferguson threw a 22-yard pass on a fake punt, and Jason White followed with his second long touchdown pass of the game, leading the top-ranked Sooners to a 20-13 victory Saturday night.

“We felt if they would be that reckless off the corners we would use it,” Stoops said. “In games like this on the road, you need to make things happen. You have to have the guts to go with it and it worked.”

White and Oklahoma’s stellar defense did the rest, leading the Sooners (2-0) to their 15th straight nonconference win.

White, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last year against Alabama, wasn’t around when the Crimson Tide almost rallied from 21 points down to win in Norman, Okla.

After a slow start in this year’s game, White answered every challenge for Oklahoma, the first No. 1 team ever to visit Tuscaloosa.

He threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton directly after the Tide’s first field goal in the second quarter, and connected with Brandon Jones on a 47-yard score right after Alabama (1-1) cut it to 13-10 in the third.

“We have receivers who have the ability to do that and Jason likes it,” Stoops said. “The more aggressive they play, it opens it up sometimes. We hit some big plays.”

White finished 21-for-35 for 259 yards and the two touchdowns. Oklahoma’s defense did the rest with five sacks and two interceptions, spoiling Alabama coach Mike Shula’s campus debut.

“They’re No. 1 for a reason and we found that out tonight,” Shula said. “They’re a well-coached, talented team.”

No. 23 Nebraska 31, Utah State 7

Lincoln, Neb. — Jammal Lord ran for 72 yards and a touchdown as No. 23 Nebraska overcame a slow start.

Lord also completed eight of 12 passes for 85 yards before giving way to Joe Dailey late in the third quarter.

David Dyches kicked field goals of 23, 20, 29 and 26 yards in his first game for Nebraska (2-0).

Jason Cox completed 13 of 15 passes for 132 yards in the first quarter as the Aggies (0-2) led 7-6.

But Cox went 4-of-18 the rest of the way — and the Demorrio Williams-led Nebraska defense limited the Aggies to just 93 total yards after the first quarter.

No. 24 Colorado 16, UCLA 14

Boulder, Colo. — Joel Klatt threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Joe Klopfenstein with 2:15 left, rallying No. 24 Colorado to victory. The Buffaloes (2-0) trailed 14-10 with five minutes remaining before marching 63 yards in 11 plays for the winning score. Colorado’s win spoiled the head coaching debut of UCLA’s Karl Dorrell, who was an assistant at Colorado for six years in the 1990s.

Missouri 35, Ball State 7

Muncie, Ind. — Brad Smith had 229 yards of total offense in the first half as Missouri beat Ball State. Missouri (2-0) answered an early Ball State score with 21 straight points before halftime. Smith, who scored on a 35-yard touchdown run to give Missouri the lead, rushed for 117 yards on 13 carries and completed 11 of 17 passes for 112 yards.

Texas A&M 28, Utah 26

College Station, Texas — Texas A&M’s Jonte Buhl knocked Utah quarterback Brett Elliott out of bounds on a two-point conversion attempt with six seconds to play, preserving the Aggies’ victory. The Aggies (2-0) led 21-0 at halftime, but the Utes rallied behind Brandon Warfield, who ran for three touchdowns and finished with 181 yards rushing on 36 carries. The Aggies were leading 28-20 in the closing minutes when Elliott drove the Utes (1-1) 76 yards and completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to John Madsen.

Texas Tech 42,

New Mexico 28

Lubbock, Texas — B.J. Symons threw for five touchdowns and ran for another as Texas Tech beat New Mexico. After D.D. Cox’s three-yard touchdown run pulled New Mexico within 35-28 in the fourth quarter, Symons led the Red Raiders (2-0) 66 yards in 12 plays and took the ball in from the 1 on a quarterback sneak with 2:43 left. He finished 37-of-54 for 418 yards. The Lobos (1-1) turned the ball over four times in the game. Casey Kelly was intercepted three times, but Tech only turned one of those into a score.

N. Texas 52, Baylor 14

Denton, Texas — North Texas turned six first-half Baylor turnovers into 17 points, then scored on its first five possessions of the second half in a 52-14 victory Saturday. Patrick Cobbs ran for 131 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown, backup Roy Bishop had 107 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns and freshman James Mitchell had a 28-yard touchdown run on his first career carry as the Mean Green (1-1) beat the Bears for the first time in 12 tries.
