Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Women’s ministries of Calvary Temple Assembly of God will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the fellowship hall of the church, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Members are celebrating the heritage of the congregation each Sunday during September by wearing special clothing and displaying objects that recognize people’s different cultural backgrounds.

Christ Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church

A Wednesday night series called “Bumper Sticker Worldviews” is being offered at Christ Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, 2312 Harvard Road.

Participants will examine popular bumper stickers to try to understand what the cultural conversations are in American society, how people can think biblically and reach out into the confusion.

The informal discussions, which will last about 80 minutes, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the church for the rest of this year. The Rev. John McFarland, pastor, has developed the series. It is free and open to the public.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

The second annual Cafe Italiano will be Sept. 13 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Italian food will be served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with live entertainment until 11 p.m. The menu will feature spaghetti with homemade sauces, Italian sausages, rigatoni, bread, salad and wine.

Carryout will be available from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

A bocce ball tournament will start the festivities at 4:30 p.m. The tournament is limited to 16 teams, with four players per team. “Taste of Italy” prizes will be given to the top two teams. Entry fee is $20 per team. Teams must be registered by Friday. Registration forms are available at the church office or by calling Lesley Huston at 887-6573.

Tickets cost $8 for adults if purchased in advance, or $10 at the door. Cost for children ages 5 through 12 is $4, and children under 4 eat free.

Tickets are available at the church office during office hours, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by calling Huston.

A percentage of proceeds will go to Catholic Community Services of Lawrence, a nonprofit counseling center for Catholic and non-Catholic Lawrence residents.

More than 600 meals were served at last year’s Cafe Italiano. This year, the church anticipates serving more than 1,200 meals.

Faith Church of the Nazarene

An adult Bible fellowship study, “Parables and Prophecy: The Literature of the Bible,” begins Sunday at Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1020 Kasold Drive.

Participants will conduct an ongoing study of the Book of Romans.

The study will be t 9:30 a.m. Sundays, when classes for all ages are offered at the church. A nursery will be provided during the classes, as well as during worship at 10:45 a.m.

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

For the sixth year, First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., is offering its Divorce Care program, a special weekly video seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

A Divorce Care group will start Sept. 28. The group will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sundays at the church. Childcare is available if arranged in advance.

First United Methodist Church

Starting Point, a class for those who are preparing for church membership, is being offered at 12:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays, starting this weekend, at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Sunday Night Live!, a new family evening, starts at 6 p.m. Sundays with a shared meal. From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., many studies are available, with at least one for each age group.

The children’s fall music program, Music & Movement, is offered for children ages 4 through sixth grade.

Heartland Community Church

A series, “Let’s Go to the Movies,” will begin at the 11 a.m. Sunday Discovery service at Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt.

Each Sunday through the end of October, the Rev. Paul Gray will explore what God might say about current popular movies. This Sunday’s theme is “The Matrix.”

Nursery and Sunday school for children is provided during the service. The public is invited to attend.

Heartland will its once-a-month OASIS service at 7 p.m. Sunday. OASIS is a time of praise and worship, communion and prayer.

Knights of Columbus

Knights of Columbus Council 1372 has donated 952 bottles of water to the Lawrence High School Marching Band. The marching band consists of 185 members.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Explorer’s Bible Study, an interdenominational ministry with classes across the country, begins Thursday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway.

This year’s study is the Book of Psalms. Classes will involve small-group discussions, lecture and workbooks for home study.

A women’s class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays, and a class for men and women will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, throughout the school year at the church.

Peace Mennonite Church

Peace Mennonite Church, which meets in the Ecumenical Christian Ministry building, 1204 Oread, is starting its fall schedule: worship, 10:30 a.m. Sunday; Christian education for all ages, 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

This fall, the Rev. Vicki Penner will preach on the “Anabaptist Vision.” Anabaptists, the radical Christians of the Reformation, are the religious forebears of the Mennonites.

The “Anabapstist Vision” is an historic speech that named discipleship, community and peacemaking as central to Mennonite identity. Penner will reflect on these values and how they can be applied today.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., launches its fall programs Sunday. Children’s choirs and bell choirs begin rehearsals. Sunday school programs, including “Rainbow Journey” for elementary students, also begin.

Adult education classes meet before the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services. “Time and Talent” volunteer forms will be available at both services.

The sanctuary will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, the second anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, for quiet prayer and reflection.

St. James AME Church

The community is invited to attend appreciation services for the Rev. Gregory Gray and first lady Cynthia Gray, featuring music, dancing and special speakers, at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. James AME Church, Seventh and Maple streets.

A reception will follow the service.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

A kick-off for the children’s G.I.F.T. Program and small-group ministry will be celebrated with “Sundaes on Sunday” after the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt will begin a new sermon series, “Reconnecting with God,” with the message, “Recovering Your Lost Spiritual Vitality.”

Trinity Lutheran Church (ELCA)

A non-profit tutoring center located at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., is coordinating a drive to find a sponsor or sponsors to help a 5-year-old Lawrence girl learn to read.

Her family is financially unable to afford a year’s worth of tutoring. Treatments for a brain tumor prevent the girl from attending school. Any amount of contribution is welcome.

The tutoring center is operated in association with the Strategic Learning Center.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A “Spiritual Celebration: Gathering of the Waters Ceremony” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

A program featuring recognition of new members, member reports and a religious education preview will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by coffee and fellowship hour at 11:30 a.m.

Unity Church of Lawrence

Thousands of people around the world will participate in Silent Unity — an international and trans-denominational prayer ministry — on Sept. 11.

This event has traditionally been held the second Thursday of September, which coincidentally falls on the second anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane, will join in this event with a World Day of Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The service, which will be interfaith and open to the public, is intended to unite people in prayer for one another.

West Side Presbyterian Church

A peacemaking offering will be received at the 11 a.m. Sunday services at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive.

The offering will help fund a “Family Matters Camp,” sponsored by the Presbytery of Arkansas, for children whose mothers are in prison.

A congregational meeting will follow the service, in order to elect seven members of the pastor nominating committee — the next step in selecting a pastor to serve the church.

West Side members will also gather from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday to honor Lola Rogers on her 90th birthday.
