4-H and FCE news

Douglas County Family and Community Education in cooperation with K-State Research & Extension Family and Consumer Sciences is offering a program on “Healthful Whole Grains” at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St. There is a $3 fee.

Susan Krumm, Douglas County Extension agent in family and consumer sciences, will be the presenter. The program will describe how to identify whole grain food products, dietary recommendations, nutrients found in whole grains and the health benefits of eating whole grains. Samples of dishes using whole grains will be prepared and shared by the participants.

To register, call the Extension Office at 843-7058. The program is free and open to the public.

  • The Clinton 4-H Club met Aug. 11 with Michelle Colgan presiding. The club discussed the Douglas County Free Fair, 4-H books, pin applications and the Baldwin Maple Leaf Festival. The Newman and Welsh families provided refreshments.
  • Stull FCE will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Douglas County Extension Office. The lesson will be on “Healthful Whole Grains.” Members will have lunch at Mr. Gatti’s.
  • India FCE will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of Emma Garrett. Regina Shaver will give the lesson.
  • Kanwaka FCE will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Mary Czupor. The co-hostess will be Aliene Bieber. Beverly Bourque will give the lesson “Life’s Tapestries and What Happens Now.”
  • The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council is sponsoring an overnight FCE educational tour Oct. 2-3 in Wichita and Newton. For information and an application, call 843-7058. The deadline is Sept. 15.
  • The Crackerjack 4-H Club met Aug. 7 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Audrey Deeken, president, called the meeting to order. Members answered roll call by telling how many projects they took to the fair. Tiffany Kramer, secretary, read the minutes of the July meeting. Holly Kitterman gave the treasurer’s report. The club sang “Happy Birthday” to members who celebrated a birthday in August.

The club voted to add $100 to the Kiss the Pig jar for Doug Walbridge.

The club ended its meeting with a pizza party.

  • The Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club met Aug. 11 for a potluck dinner and business meeting. The club recognized 4-H’ers who received awards during the Douglas County Free Fair. Members were reminded that record books are due Sept. 15. The members took a record book challenge to complete their personal page, permanent record and at least one Kansas 4-H Award Application.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday. The club will elect officers.
