Ottawa

Gasoline station fire under investigation

Ottawa — A gasoline station fire that severely burned a man Monday is being investigated by local and state fire officials.

Ottawa firefighters went to First Stop Texaco, 2520 E. Logan St., about 2:25 p.m., after a spark ignited gasoline, burning an employee of Double Check Inc., of Manhattan, and setting his truck ablaze, Assistant Fire Chief Richard Oglesby said.

The man was identified by Double Check as Marty Stenfors, 24. He had worked for the company more than two years, Manhattan branch manager Scott Wallace said.

Stenfors was taken by Franklin County ambulance to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa and then taken by helicopter to KU Med in Kansas City, Kan.

Stenfors was thought to be at the station examining a sub pump sensor, Oglesby said. The cause of the spark is being investigated by the Ottawa Fire Department and the Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office, he said.

Stenfors was in critical condition but his vital signs were strong Tuesday, Wallace said.

Accident

Teenagers recovering from rollover wreck

Two teens are recovering from a weekend rollover wreck in Franklin County that required both be flown to the hospital by helicopter.

The driver, Christopher Adell, 19, Pomona, was in fair condition, and passenger Nicholas Ayres, 19, Oklahoma, was in good condition Tuesday. Both were at KU Med, Kansas City, Kan.

About 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Adell was driving a Chevrolet Blazer east on Shawnee Road near Le Loup. He lost control, and the vehicle went into a ditch and overturned, police said.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, and both were ejected from the vehicle. Police arrived at the scene seven minutes later, and an air ambulance flew Adell from the scene to KU Med. An ambulance crew initially took Ayres to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, but he was later flown to KU Med, police said.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the wreck, Franklin County Undersheriff Kevin Kimball said.
