Lawrence schools ‘Get Moving’

Lawrence elementary physical education classes participate in the Get Moving program in collaboration with the Douglas County Community Health Improvement Project. It encourages exercise outside the school day and exercising with parents.

Below is additional information about the Lawrence school district’s P.E. program from the district’s curriculum guide.

Physical education is an activity-based program that enhances the continuous growth of students, as they become “physically educated persons.”

Elementary students attend physical education classes for 45-minute periods on a rotation with music and art classes (every third day).

Kindergarten students meet five times for 25-minute periods every three weeks. Elementary and kindergarten students also are encouraged to be active during daily recess. Junior and senior high students have semester P.E. courses. Students are required to take physical education in seventh through ninth grades and one additional semester at the high school level. The program is a broad, activity-based curriculum designed from the district standards.

Students have the opportunity to use a wide variety of large and small equipment. Instruction may include community members and the use of several facilities within the community. Athletic programs are available as students reach the junior high level. The community offers additional programs in a variety of sports activities through the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and other private organizations.

The focus of the physical education curriculum:

  • Learning skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities
  • Being physically fit
  • Participating regularly in physical activity
  • Knowing the implications of and the benefits of involvement in physical activities
  • Demonstrating a positive disposition toward physical activity that leads to a healthy lifestyle.
