Ethel A. Butell

Services for Ethel A. Butell, 95, Baldwin, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Butell died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 28, 1908, in Paola, the daughter of Weston E. and Ellen Riley McWilliams. She graduated from Paola High School.

Mrs. Butell was an office secretary for Farm Bureau Extension for a year and secretary of Home Savings and Loan Assn. in Paola for five years. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center and Harmony Singers and was South Douglas County Precinct Committeewoman for several years. She was a charter member of Willmyra Extension Unit and a 50-year member of Extension, serving on the advisory board for four years.

She was the organist and choir leader at Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin for 36 years and taught CCD classes to Baldwin and Edgerton students. She wrote a history of the Annunciation Church in 1968 and a history of Prairie City, titled “Where was Prairie City.”

She married George H. Butell on April 2, 1932, in Baldwin. He died Aug. 1, 1990.

Survivors include a son, G. Robert Butell, Baldwin.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the Catholic center.

The family suggests memorials to the Catholic center, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
