KU engineering school receives $6.5 million gift

Former Standard Oil chairman Charles E. Spahr has committed another $6.5 million to Kansas University’s School of Engineering, KU officials announced Monday.

Spahr’s latest gift brings the total amount he has committed to KU since 1954 to $11.5 million.

Spahr, a 1934 civil engineering graduate, and his wife, Mary Jane, made their latest gift through a combination of contributions and estate plans.

The latest gift will establish the unrestricted Spahr Engineering Fund at the KU Endowment Association, which will be used to provide support for engineering students and faculty members.

“Charlie and Janie Spahr are among the university’s most ardent supporters,” said KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway. “For almost 50 years, they have given their time, talent and financial support to benefit KU. The Spahrs will continue to leave a legacy of pride and hope for our future students and faculty members.”

Spahr said he and his wife want to provide long-term support for the engineering school.

“Janie and I want to do all that we can to help the KU School of Engineering be one of the best in the United States,” he said. “It’s our hope that our gifts will benefit others through the educational process far into the future.”
