McLouth falls to Wathena

Ottawa High hammers Burlington in district play

? McLouth High’s last-minute two-point conversion attempt was ruled just short, and the Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 21-20 Class 2-1A district football loss Friday to Wathena.

Cody Cook caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Stewart with 23 seconds left, and McLouth attempted a two-point conversion.

However, a swing pass was ruled just outside the end zone.

“One (official) called it good, but the other called it no good,” McLouth coach Harry Hester said. “That got me tossed right there. But that’s not what cost us the game. It would have been tremendous for the kids, though.”

Stewart finished with 123 passing yards and 83 yards rushing for McLouth, which fell to 0-8 overall, 0-2 in district play.

The Bulldogs finished with 302 yards of total offense, their second straight game with 300-plus total yards.

“The kids played hard,” Hester said. “They did all we asked. We played well enough to win. We had other opportunities, but that’s what happens when you play eight sophomores and a freshman.

“We’re young. I thought we’d be peaking now, and we’re really playing exceptional. It would be a shame if we only have one more game.”

McLouth will play host to Jefferson County North Thursday in its regular-season finale.

Hester said the Bulldogs still could advance to the playoffs with a win of 10 or more points over JCN and a victory Thursday by Troy over Wathena.

“We came out of the gate pretty well,” Ottawa coach Pat Boeh said. “Burlington matched our play in the first half, but we kind of blew it open in the third quarter.”

QB Gabe Sheffield completed 7-of-9 passes for 109 yards and rushed for a 52-yard score for Ottawa (7-1 overall, 2-0 district), which racked up 506 yards of total offense.

“We played one of our better overall games,” Boeh said. “We were struggling a little bit in the last three games, not playing to the best of our ability. We finally played the game we were capable of playing, and Burlington is a quality opponent. We expected a hard-fought game.”
