District lists school for sale on eBay

? A western Kansas school district has put a former schoolhouse on sale on the Internet auction site eBay in hopes of attracting a business to the area.

The former McCracken Middle School, which closed in May, is listed on eBay with a target price of $5,000, “but it may go higher or could sell for less,” according to the advertisement.

Terms of the listing call for the building to be on sale for 30 days. The advertisement was listed Oct. 16.

“At the end of 30 days, the board has said it will sell the building,” LaCrosse Supt. Larry Jackson said.

Jackson said this was the second round of attempts to sell the 22,158-square-foot building. The school board decided in August to list the school building on eBay.

The school board had tried to sell the building locally but hadn’t attracted any interest in the building.

But since listing the school building on eBay, Jackson said he has been inundated with inquiries. He said bids already have been submitted, but he would not disclose for how much.

School district officials said they hoped the sale would attract a new business to the building.

“I would like to see economic development in the town of McCracken,” Jackson said.

The suggested uses include a hunting lodge, a warehouse for antiques and a nursery.

The school district paid $150 to list the building on eBay, as well as $19.95 to be a featured listing, which posts the building at the top of the auction Web site’s page.
