Jayhawks upend No. 16 Huskers

? Sophomore Caroline Smith scored her 15th goal of the season, leading the Kansas University soccer squad to a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Nebraska Sunday at Abbott Sports Complex.

The win was the first-ever for the Jayhawks over the Huskers and KU’s first against a ranked opponent. KU improved to 12-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

“It definitely is a huge win for us and a good hurdle to overcome,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “Beating a ranked opponent helps us mentally. We really battled in today’s win.”

Smith scored in the 57th minute on an assist from junior Stacy Leeper.

KU junior keeper Meghan Miller stopped five shots, earning her eighth shutout of the season and 16th of her career.

“I think our girls played well and deserved to win,” Francis said. “It was truly a team effort after our tiring loss on Friday.”

The Jayhawks will play host to Oklahoma at 4 p.m. Friday at SuperTarget Field.
