Shy services

? Memorial services for Raymond William Shy, 73, Harlingen, Texas, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Penwell Gabel Midtown Chapel in Topeka. Private burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, Topeka. Memorial services also are planned in Harlingen.

Mr. Shy died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen after becoming ill while vacationing in Cañon City, Colo.

He was born July 4, 1930, in Topeka. He was raised north of Topeka and attended Kaw Valley Grade School and St. John’s Lutheran School, and graduated from Seaman High School in 1948.

Mr. Shy had served in the Army Reserves. He retired as district chief from the Topeka Fire Department after more than 37 years of service. Since retirement, he had lived in Harlingen, Texas.

He married Agnes Montague in 1953. He married Jane Hamilton Asbury in 1968. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Lou Ann Shy-Montague, Columbia, Mo., Carolyn Church and Nancy Boulton, both of Lawrence, and Jeannie Wiseman, Topeka; a brother, Walter, Cañon City, Colo.; two sisters, Mildred Currence, Topeka, and Lillian Raynor, Harlingen; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A grandson died earlier.

The family will meet friends at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the restored No. 2 Fire Station, now the Kansas Trial Lawyers Assn. building, at 719 S.E. Van Buren St., Topeka.
