Crayola fans select four new crayon colors

You won’t find magic mint or blizzard blue in Crayola crayon boxes anymore. Mulberry and teal blue are gone, too.

But four new colors are taking their places: jazzberry jam, mango tango, inchworm and wild blue yonder.

The changes were part of a competition to celebrate Crayola’s 100th anniversary today, when the new colors will be introduced.

The company had picked five colors that it considered redundant or unattractive, but allowed one to be spared through an online vote. Burnt sienna received the most votes of the 60,000 cast and avoided retirement.

Disneyland coaster inspected before crash

A Disneyland repair crew found no problems when it inspected a roller coaster only hours before the ride derailed and killed a 22-year-old man, according to police documents.

Four Disneyland mechanics performed routine maintenance on the morning of Sept. 5 on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, according to documents released Thursday.

Later that day, the roller coaster derailed inside a tunnel as it was climbing a steep grade, killing passenger Marcelo Torres and injuring 10 others.

Disneyland employees told police they heard an unusual clanking sound and were about to take one of the trains out of service before the crash.

Police have said the accident was not the result of criminal wrongdoing.

Officials seize bear, tiger

An emaciated Bengal tiger and a black bear were found at two homes in cramped cages, as officials launched an investigation into a possible exotic animal sales ring in Iowa and South Dakota.

The endangered tiger and bear were seized earlier this week after Sioux City police and animal control officials heard that people were attempting to sell exotic animals. They notified the South Dakota county, which is just over the state line.

Union County Detective Mike Bucholz said both animals were left in “extremely bad” living conditions and were in poor physical shape. The tiger weighed 250 pounds, less than half what it should weigh.
