Traveling Argentines reach Alaskan goal

The Argentine couple traveling from their home country to Alaska in an antique car have reached their destination.

In an e-mail Thursday to the Journal-World, Herman and Candelaria Zapp said they, along with their 1-year-old son, Pampa, reached the Arctic Ocean on Sept. 11. The Zapps left in January 2000.

They logged 44,000 miles on the trip in a 1928 Graham-Paige car, seeing more than 20 countries at a top speed of 30 mph. In April, they stopped in Lawrence and were featured in a story in the Journal-World.

The couple were inspired to make the trip by hearing stories of explorers such as Henry Hudson and James Cook. They often stayed with friends they met along the way.

The Zapps said they now planned to ship their car from Anchorage, Alaska, to South America, write a book about their experiences and build cabins to house the visitors they invited to Argentina while on their journey.

Lawrence high school

Danny Manning among Hall of Honor inductees

In more ways than one, people will look up to Sunday’s inductees in the Hall of Honor at Lawrence High School.

Scheduled for induction is basketball great Danny Manning, who led the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship in 1988 and had a long NBA career. He graduated from LHS in 1984.

Joining Manning in the Lions Alumni Assn.’s Hall of Honor this year are retired teacher Mary Demeritt Gordon and Dr. Kris Sperry.

Gordon graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1951. She devoted her career to teaching visually impaired students and is a member of the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame.

Sperry, a 1971 graduate of LHS, is a forensic pathologist and the chief medical examiner for the state of Georgia. He lives in Sharpsburg, Ga.

The trio will be inducted 2 p.m. Sunday at LHS, 1901 La.

Since 1994, the alumni association has annually recognized outstanding graduates who achieved success in their lives and professions, as well as several nongraduates who contributed to the success of Liberty Memorial or LHS.
