Program showcases after-school activities

Lawrence school students will celebrate the value of after-school programs tonight with a talent show at Haskell Indian Nations University.
The Lawrence school district and the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence will be host to Lights On Afterschool! from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Haskell’s auditorium. In addition to the talent show, booths will showcase activities of children in after-school programs.
Boys & Girls Club coordinates programs at Cordley, Deerfield, New York, Pinckney and Langston Hughes schools and the organization’s main site at 15th Street and Haskell Avenue.
The district also has after-school programs at Kennedy and Woodlawn elementary schools and South and Central junior high schools.
Approximately 1,000 students are involved in after-school programs this year at these sites.
Lights On Afterschool! is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization working to provide children in the United States with high-quality, affordable after-school programs. California Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger is the organization’s national chairman.
