Jayhawks, Huskers to clash

Kansas University’s volleyball team will try to notch its second win ever against Nebraska when the two squads meet tonight.

Or will it?

KU’s history books show the Jayhawks trail the all-time series 69-1, while Nebraska’s records have the Huskers holding a 70-0 advantage.

Some fuzzy bookkeeping during a tournament at Graceland College in 1975 is the root of the controversy. The Jayhawks claim they won the three-game series, 12-15, 14-12, 15-5. However, Nebraska’s history books show a 15-12, 12-15, 15-5 Husker victory.

Regardless, it’s been 28 years since Kansas possibly beat Nebraska. Game time is 7 p.m. at Horejsi Center.

Sixth-year Kansas coach Ray Bechard is 0-10 against the Huskers (14-1 overall, 6-0 Big 12 Conference).

“I can’t recollect Kansas having ever beaten Nebraska,” Bechard said. “There’s obviously some other Big 12 teams in that same boat. There’s a point in time where you have to close the gap and hope things go your way. We hope we’ve closed the gap a little bit this season.”

Kansas (11-5, 3-2) has taken strides during the last two years to combat the Huskers. At 5-foot-10, sophomore Andi Rozum is a front-line threat at setter. The Jayhawks have bigger blockers in 6-1 junior Ashley Michaels and 6-foot sophomore Josi Lima. Plus, 5-11 freshman Janaina Correa already has developed into one of the Big 12’s most versatile hitters.

Meanwhile, Nebraska lost three All-Americans in Laura Pilakowski, Amber Holmquist and Greichaly Cepero.

Because of Nebraska’ losses and Kansas’ gains, expectations are high tonight. The Jayhawks have won four of their last five matches, and Correa was the Big 12 Player of the Week last week. Plus, the KU-Nebraska match has been sold out each of the last three years, and a packed house is expected again.

“It’s definitely motivating for us that we’ll have to shut the doors,” senior Abbie Jacobson said. “That’s exactly the environment we want. I’m confident that we’ll lay it all on the floor against Nebraska.”

Kansas will travel Saturday to Oklahoma.
