Eudora opens gym in style

Cardinals perfect in home debut

? Lauren Kracl already was having a successful senior season, but the Eudora volleyball player might want to call it quits after Tuesday night.

How do you top opening your brand-new gym with victories on a night dedicated to seniors?

The answer is, you probably can’t, and at least for this season the Cardinals won’t be able to because they defeated both Prairie View (25-13, 25-21), and Osawatomie (28-26, 25-11) in their only home triangular of the year.

“It’s a new beginning,” Kracl said. “We’ve started some tradition this year, and it’s pretty awesome to know that we’ll never lose in this gym.”

Even before Eudora officially opened its glamorous gym Tuesday, the Cardinals weren’t dropping too many matches.

Eudora (25-3) regularly has been dominating opponents — with the 6-foot Kracl playing a major role in those routs.

“Lauren has been our main player for four years,” Cardinal coach Jill Stutler said. “This program has been building for this type of season for three years.”

But it only took the Cards three practices to get accustomed to their new mega gym, which features a huge “E” painted at the center of the main basketball court.

An oversized mural of a mean red bird graces one wall, while the floor of the gym — which seems nearly twice as big as the former EHS gym — has “Eudora” painted in red and blue.

And it’s not as if Eudora’s “old” gym was outdated. That recently built gym, which sits only a stone’s throw away, was spacious and state-of-the-art. But compared to the new one, the old EHS gym is as outdated as Larry Bird’s thigh-high shorts.

“Yeah, it’s kind of like upgrading from an Explorer to an Escalade,” Eudora activities director Dave Durkin said.

Stutler still is in amazement, and said because of the building’s spaciousness, she made her team practice drills in every corner of the gym to get acquainted.

“They were pretty excited that they were the ones that got to open it up,” Stutler said.

But Tuesday wasn’t a perfect night for the Cardinals.

Anderson County, which was supposed to be the third team to play Eudora in the scheduled quadrangular, chose not to compete against the Cardinals. It was the third time in as many weeks the Bulldogs backed out against Eudora, but since it wasn’t a league game, Anderson County didn’t have to forfeit.

EHS fans didn’t seem too pleased, though, and let the Bulldogs know, chanting the school’s name while the Bulldogs boarded their bus. Next week the Bulldogs will have to play Eudora as the Cardinals end their regular season at Garnett.

Despite the controversial decision by Anderson County, Kracl said Tuesday was a magical moment.

“We definitely didn’t want to lose on this night,” Kracl said with a smile. “It was pretty awesome, and I was proud to be part of a new Cardinal tradition.”
