KU, CU on crash course

It’s not a misprint.

Kansas University (4-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12 Conference), which has finished last in the North Division three straight years, enters Saturday’s game at Colorado in first place in the division and within two wins of becoming bowl-eligible.

The two-time North champion Buffaloes (2-3, 0-1), meanwhile, already are in a must-win situation with a trip to Kansas State, a home game against top-ranked Oklahoma and a visit to Texas Tech looming in successive weeks.

How did we get to this point?

Let’s start with Colorado’s 42-30 loss to Baylor, a team that has won just five conference games in the Big 12’s eight-year history.

With the toughest stretch of their schedule approaching, the Buffaloes are reeling after three straight losses. The Colorado media called Saturday’s loss the lowest point for the Buffaloes since they were beaten by Drake in 1979 and again in 1980.

“It’s a tough thing to swallow, but we’ve got to swallow it,” Colorado coach Gary Barnett said.

A defense that Barnett boasted could be his best in five years at Colorado has given up 40 points to three straight opponents. The last time Colorado did that was a five-game stretch in 1980.

The Buffs haven’t been the same since defensive end Marques Harris broke his leg against UCLA in the second game. Then again, Harris is only one man.

“We’re just getting outmanned up front,” Barnett said. “It’s been that way for three weeks now. I don’t know if there’s any answers for us there, either.”

There were four position changes on the offensive line during Colorado’s open week.

Starting quarterback Joel Klatt suffered a shoulder injury against Washington State. Erik Greenberg, who started last week’s lopsided loss to Florida State, performed admirably against Baylor, going 16-for-29 for 346 yards and two touchdowns.

But Greenberg had to leave in the fourth quarter after injuring his right hand when he hit a Baylor player’s helmet in the fourth quarter.

Tailback Bobby Purify is out until Oct. 18 against Kansas State because of an ankle injury.

“We just didn’t get in sync,” Barnett said of the Buffs’ struggle against Baylor. “I don’t know what sync means anymore.”
