Southwest Assemblies player hurt

Josh Roark, a Southwestern Assemblies of God University wide receiver, was under sedation at the KU Med Center Saturday evening, according to SAGU coach Jesse Godding.

Roark, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound freshman, was evacuated by helicopter from Haskell Stadium after suffering an apparent head injury on the sixth play of Saturday’s football game with Haskell Indian Nations University.

Roark caught a pass from quarterback Ryan Smith, was undercut by HINU free safety Antonio Hayes then dropped the ball as he dropped to the grass. Roark was knocked cold.

“At the time I hit him I was happy,” Hayes said, “then they told me he was out for 17 minutes.”

Haskell officials called for Douglas County Fire and Med personnel and the med-evac helicopter. Both teams returned to their locker rooms.

“I kept going out and looking for the helicopter,” Hayes said. “Then I heard he would be OK.”

The incident caused the game to be delayed for an hour.

Godding said Roark was in the intensive care unit and doctors were awaiting results of a CAT scan.

“There was nothing malicious about the hit,” the SAGU coach said. “It was a clean football play. It’s just unfortunate it had to happen.”
