Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, recently completed National Advanced Leadership Camp training in Fort Lewis, Wash.

The camp provides professional training for cadets in camp life, administration and logistical support to evaluate each cadet’s officer potential. Washburn is a senior at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y.

  • Army Reserve Pvt. Elijah J. Fell has graduated from basic combat military training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

During the eight weeks of training, Fell studied the Army mission and received instruction in drill and ceremonies, rifle marksmanship, weapons, map reading, tactics, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, Army history, core values and traditions, and special training in human relations.

Fell is the son of Mary and Christopher Fell, Lawrence.

  • Army National Guard Pvt. Joseph M. Shelton has graduated from One Station Unit Training at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training.

During basic training, Shelton received instruction in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training and first aid. He developed combat skills and handled various weapons available to the infantry soldier.

During advanced individual training, Shelton received instruction to serve as an infantryman using light and heavy anti-armor weapons, indirect-fire support and mechanized operations while assigned to a rifle or mortar squad. The training included weapons qualification, tactics, patrolling, navigation, field communications and combat operations; engagement in infantry combat exercises, battle drills, land mine locating, neutralizing and extracting; and survival operations during a nuclear, biological or chemical attack.

Shelton, a 2002 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of Rebecca Woolery and James Shelton, both of Lawrence.

  • Pvt. Mark T. Anderson graduated from basic military training and advanced individual training Sept. 19 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

Anderson, a 2003 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of Joel and Pamela Hahn, Lawrence.

Anderson is scheduled to complete airborne training Oct. 10, then travel to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he will be based with the 82nd Airborne.

  • A retirement ceremony was given for Cmdr. Jeffrey H. Richards, who served as executive officer of Kansas University’s Navy ROTC unit from July 2000 to August 2003. The ceremony was Sept. 28 in Tecumseh.

During his career, one of Richards’ assignments was a Desert Storm deployment aboard the USS Eisenhower.

Richards is authorized to wear the Navy Commendation Medal with silver star, the Navy Achievement Medal with three gold stars, and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal with bronze star, the Kuwait and Saudi Liberation Medals, the Expert Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Medals, and various other expeditionary, service and unit awards.

Richards is pursuing a doctorate in higher education administration at KU.
