Mason lifts Baldwin past Spring Hill

? Micah Mason’s 77-yard touchdown run started the scoring, and his 67-yard TD run finished it as Baldwin High routed Spring Hill, 41-15, in football Friday night.

Mason finished with 303 yards on 23 carries with five touchdowns, and Andy Hannon had six catches for 106 yards for Baldwin, which improved to 4-1 on its homecoming night.

“Micah had a phenomenal game, and so did Andy,” BHS coach Mike Berg said. “They came to play.”

Berg wondered if the rest of the Bulldogs did the same early. Baldwin scored a touchdown each in the first and second quarters — Mason’s 77-yard run and his one-yarder — and carried a 14-0 lead into halftime.

“We came out of the chutes kind of slow,” Berg said. “We didn’t really get going until the second half. We had a few fumbles, a few penalties. Micah had a touchdown called back. Then the mistakes vanished, and it was a great game.”

Baldwin put it away with a 21-point fourth quarter.

“It was great to get our offense on track,” Berg said. “Our offense has been playing great all year, but we hadn’t put those kinds of numbers up. It shows the kids are improving. It’s been a gradual thing. We’ve had some young kids filling in on the offensive line, and we’re starting to come together.”

BHS had 501 total offensive yards and surrendered just 144.

“Our defense is playing well right now,” Berg said. “They’re giving the offense a chance, with good field position. They say defense wins championships, and we’re trying to improve offensively.”

Baldwin will play host Friday to Eudora.

“It’s a big game,” Berg said. “We’ve got ’em at home. We had to play them twice on the road last year. They have a fine ballclub, well coached, and they’re having a great year.”

Ottawa 37, K.C. Sumner 19

Ottawa — Kansas City Sumner returned the opening kick 99 yards for a touchdown. What, Ottawa worry?

The Cyclones’ Aaron Douglas responded with an 80-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff, and Ottawa pulled away after the teams played to a 7-all tie just 27 seconds in.

“No, I’d never seen anything like that,” Ottawa coach Pat Boeh said. “It was 11 minutes, 33 seconds to go in the first when they went 99 and we went 80, and we were like, ‘Let’s start over at 0.’ We’ve struggled in the kicking game, as far as kickoff coverage, so we were disappointed, but we answered, and it was even-Steven.”

Dom Nation had 17 carries for 150 yards and three touchdowns — all in the second half — for Ottawa (5-0).

“We overcame a lot of adversity in this game,” Boeh said. “K.C. Sumner came out and outplayed us in the first half. We were down at halftime by three. We really played our worst half of the year, but fortunately we overcame that and played a better second half.

“We reestablished the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line forced the issue at hand, and we were able to get our running game going. And I think conditioning was a factor.”

Ottawa will travel Friday to Atchison.
