Phillips County businesses create own hamburger

— Nine restaurants in Phillips County are serving the Phillipsburger.

The restaurants were inspired by people who said the county had the best hamburgers in the region.

The burger -- with lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese and a special sauce -- was added to menus at businesses in Phillipsburg, Glade and Logan.

Debra Dreiling, chairwoman of the convention and visitors bureau, said the idea was inspired when she traveled to tourism and trade meetings. She said people often told her that Phillips County had the best burgers in the region and the communities should try to market it.

The first Phillipsburgers were served this summer at the annual Riverless Festival. They've since become popular with area residents.

Janice Patterson, owner of The Chubby Pickle in Phillipsburg, said she and her crew make between five and 10 Phillipsburgers each day -- a pretty good number for a little restaurant along U.S. Highway 36 with a large-sized menu.

"I was totally amazed, to be quite honest," Patterson said. "It's not just a one-time thing."

People call asking if the restaurant has the Phillipsburger. Others comment on the sign that hangs behind the counter. And some people are working their way around the county with hopes of trying the Phillipsburger at all nine restaurants.

Dreiling said plans to market the burger included a coupon booklet that's in the works and a contest on who has the best Phillipsburger in the county.

"I don't think we're going to pull hoards of traffic off of I-70, but we thought this was a good idea," she said.
