BZA to hear Wal-Mart appeal

Wal-Mart officials will take their case to build a 132,000-square-foot store at Sixth and Wakarusa to the Board of Zoning Appeals on Thursday evening.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

Wal-Mart wants to build a 132,000-square-foot store at Sixth Street the Wakarusa Drive. But the city has denied building permit applications for that site. The BZA will listen to Wal-Mart’s appeal.

On Wednesday night, the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission approved changes in zoning for that site that would limit the largest retail store to 80,000 square feet (see story). Those zoning changes are expected to go to the city commission on Oct. 21.
