Howard Lee Smith

Graveside service for Howard Lee Smith, 86, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Onaga, the son of Thomas Lee and Pearl Annie (Hopper) Smith.

Mr. Smith moved from Onaga to Lawrence shortly after birth. He served from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division in California, Hawaii, Australia, the Philippines and Japan. He worked as a truck driver for Theo. Poehler Mercantile, as a production operator for Lawrence Paper Co. and for Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

He married Helen Bernice Miller on June 15, 1941, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Carol Smith, Gainesville, Fla.; three sisters, Hazel Smith and Margie Wiseman, both of Lawrence, and Dorothy Wischropp, Topeka.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the funeral home.
