J-W photographer to sign ‘America 24/7’ at Borders

Journal-World chief photographer Mike Yoder will sign copies of “America 24/7” with Kansas City photographer Dan White from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Borders, 700 N.H.

Two of Yoder’s photos appeared in the book, and the cover image was shot by White. Yoder’s photos were a morning pledge to the Bible at Heritage Baptist Church in Lawrence and a night diner shot outside Marysville. Lawrence photographer Kyle Gerstner, also made it into the book with a shot of a tornado in Texas.

The book contains images shot with digital cameras by amateur and professional photographers across the country that capture people, young and old, at work and play, during a period of one week.

Raven Bookstore to have regional authors event

The Raven Bookstore will be host to four regional authors Wednesday.

The autograph party will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the bookstore, 8 E. Seventh St.

At the event will be Mark Bouton, Topeka, author of the new mystery “Max Conquers the Cosmos”; Sally Goldenbaum, Kansas City, author of the new mystery “Murders on Elderberry Road”; Frances Kite and Debra Rowden, Lawrence, authors who write about quilts inspired by poetry in “Quilting a Poem”; and Pok Chi Lau, Kansas University professor of design and photography, whose book of photographs and text on Asian Americans is called “Dreams of the Golden Mountain.”

Missouri native to read in Midwest Poets Series

Kansas City, Mo. — Poet and literary commentator David Baker, who was raised in Missouri, will read for Rockhurst University’s Midwest Poets Series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mabee Theater, Sedgwick Hall.

Baker’s volumes of poetry include “Starlight: Selected Poems,” “The Truth About Small Towns,” “Sweet Home, Saturday Night” and “Changeable Thunder.” His poems have appeared in such publications as “The Nation,” “The New Yorker” and “The Yale Review.”

He holds the Thomas Fordham Chair in Creative Writing at Denison University in Ohio and teaches in the master of fine arts program at Warren Wilson College.

New Letters Web site features literary calendar

Kansas City, Mo. — New Letters, Kansas City’s international literary magazine, has launched a new Web site that features a literary events calendar for the Kansas City region.

It features details and contact information for a range of organizations, including those in the Lawrence area.

The site also includes a searchable database for the 30-year history of New Letter quarterly magazine and the 25-year history of its companion, New Letters on the Air.
