Pierce gets triple-double despite injury
Former Jayhawks collects 26 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, minor shoulder wound
Boston ? Paul Pierce refused to let an early injury affect his overall performance.
Pierce, a former Kansas University standout, had 26 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his first triple-double of the season to lead Boston past the Milwaukee Bucks, 106-96, Friday night, the first time this season the Celtics have scored 100 or more points.
Pierce collided with Bucks center Daniel Santiago early in the first quarter and had to leave the game for a short time. He came back and hit five of seven shots to finish with 11 points in the quarter.
“I just went out there and tried to shake it off like I do with all my other little nagging injuries,” Pierce said. “(The triple-double’s) a good thing because I know I’ve done the little things I tried to do to help the team win.”
Former Jayhawk Raef LaFrentz led Boston’s solid bench scoring with 14 points. Eric Williams had 13 points, and Marcus Banks scored 11 as the Celtics’ reserves outscored Milwaukee’s, 55-34.
“I thought we got contributions from a lot of people off the bench,” Boston coach Jim O’Brien said.
Despite the early injury, Pierce scored 15 of his points and had half of his rebounds and assists in the first half.
“I knew his shoulder was hurting him a little early so he had to pass a little more to get a triple-double,” Williams said. “That shows what kind of player he is.”
No Boston opponent has scored 100 or more points this season, and Boston’s point total ended the longest season-opening streak of a team not being involved in a 100-point game in NBA history at 14.

Boston Celtics' Paul Pierce reacts to treatment by trainer Ed Lacerte during the first quarter against the Milwaukee Bucks. Pierce returned and recorded a triple-double -- 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists -- in Boston's 106-96 victory over the Bucks Friday in Boston.
The longest overall streak is 18 by the Miami Heat during the 1988-89 season.
Michael Redd led the Bucks with 20 points, and Joe Smith had 12 points and seven rebounds.
“They dominated the whole game,” Redd said.
It was the first of back-to-back games between the clubs, which play in Milwaukee tonight.
The game featured an interesting matchup of highly drafted point guards — Banks and Milwuakee’s T.J. Ford.
Ford was more electrifying, with some nifty passes. He collected six points and five assists.
“They’re both very quick, and they like to get the tempo up,” Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. “It was nice to see them go at each other.”
Boston, which trailed only twice early in the first quarter, took control with a 15-6 run late in the second quarter that pushed its lead to 56-42. LaFrentz scored six during the spurt.
The Celtics held a 58-45 halftime lead and opened the second half with a 15-7 run, taking a 19-point lead on Pierce’s three-point play midway into the third quarter.
Boston went over 100 on Williams’ basket with 1:50 to play.
