NCAA bid could be on line today

Kansas University’s volleyball team has been carrying a little checklist with it all month.

The list, which consists of each opponent KU has faced in November, has been more of a road map to the NCAA Tournament than a schedule reminder.

The Jayhawks (20-10 overall, 12-7 Big 12 Conference) barely registered a blip on the tournament bubble with their 14-9 record at the end of October. The November checklist helped them refocus, said senior Abbie Jacobson. A 6-1 record this month ensued.

A victory in tonight’s meeting with Texas Tech (11-17, 3-16) would secure a share of third place in the Big 12 and likely solidify KU’s place in the postseason. Match time is 7 p.m. at the Horejsi Center.

Then, the Jayhawks will gather in the Memorial Stadium press box at 7 p.m. Sunday to watch the NCAA Tournament Selection Show.

“We said at the beginning of November that we wanted to make this a November to remember,” Jacobson said. “We’ve had our list and checked off each team as we played them. Now we’re to the point where an NCAA bid is really close, and we’re going to see our name on the screen. We reported Aug. 4, and we’ve talked about Nov. 30 every day since then. It’s really exciting now that it’s almost here.”

Tonight will be the final home match for Jacobson and fellow seniors Sarah Rome and Jordan Garrison. It will also be the final match of their careers unless an NCAA Tournament berth is earned. Kansas never has been to the NCAA Tournament in the program’s 29-year history, so sixth-year coach Ray Bechard said he hoped postseason play would be a part of their senior send-off.

“Since the Big 12 was formed and this conference became a superconference, this is obviously the most success we’ve enjoyed,” Bechard said. “Those girls have been part of that process, and they’ve been through some times that haven’t been so fun. (Saturday) night I hope we can play well and they can go out on a winning note. All of them will play a significant role.”

Kansas won at Texas Tech, 3-1, in early October, and the Red Raiders have struggled since. Still, Bechard said he expected a difficult match because both teams had plenty for which to play.

“They’ve got a couple of players that have their last collegiate match, so I’m sure they’ll fight,” he said, “but the Jayhawks have got a lot to play for, too. We want to secure an NCAA bid. We don’t want to go into Sunday night with any anxiety or wondering about it. We think a tie for third in the Big 12 would put us in a great position.”
