Texas has a banner night

Longhorns unveil new flags, whip Bruins

? On a night No. 2 Texas unveiled new banners for last season’s Big 12 Conference title and Final Four finish, freshman Tiffany Jackson turned the game into a showcase of the Longhorns’ future.

One of the top high school recruits in the nation last season, Jackson scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in her home debut, sending the No. 2 Longhorns (3-0) to an 89-58 win over UCLA.

Jackson had teased Texas fans with 15 points in a season-opening win over No. 4 Duke and followed that with 11 rebounds a week later at North Carolina State.

Given a chance to please the home crowd, she didn’t disappoint.

“She’s the gifted one, no question about it,” said Texas coach Jody Conradt, whose Longhorns ran their home winning streak to 21.

“She’s a special player. With special skills comes responsibility. She stepped up on both ends of the floor.”

Jackson had 13 points and seven rebounds in the second half as Texas turned a 37-35 halftime lead into a rout.

“The game is a lot faster and more physical,” she said. “The key to winning big basketball games is rebounding. I know that’s a big part of our success.”

Texas didn’t do much of that in the first half. The Longhorns shot 59 percent in the half but on the rare times they missed, they grabbed just one offensive rebound. The Bruins (1-1) outrebounded Texas 22-16 in the first half and hit six three-pointers to keep it close.

The Longhorns held a 35-24 lead midway through the first half. Gennifer Arranaga’s three-pointer sparked a UCLA run that cut the lead to two by halftime.

Jamie Carey finished with 16 points for the Longhorns, who won’t get the benefit of a long home stand. Texas travels Friday to play Navy in Hawaii in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
