PBS documentary seeks haven for jaguar

Glenn Close narrates “In Search of the Jaguar” (7 p.m., PBS), which follows conservationist and author Dr. Alan Rabinowitz as he attempts to secure safe havens for the endangered jungle cat.

The number of jaguars has dwindled because their habitat has been deforested and developed. Rabinowitz hopes to establish a “jaguar corridor,” a continuous stretch of public and private lands stretching from Mexico to Argentina, that will allow the ferocious felines to migrate and breed with other populations.

He faces huge obstacles, including political indifference, drug runners and guerrilla warfare. But his greatest challenge is his own health. Rabinowitz was diagnosed with leukemia in 2001, but he continues his efforts to save the big cats that have been his life’s obsession.
