Kansas men’s soccer to play in national meet

Kansas University’s men’s club soccer team will meet Mississippi State and Cal-Berkeley Thursday in the NCSA National Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Seeded No. 6 out of 24 teams, Kansas has a 3-1-1 record against teams in the tourney. KU will meet Mississippi State at noon and Cal-Berkeley at 6 p.m.

KU baseball lands Washburn Rural product

Brock Simpson, a senior at Topeka’s Washburn Rural High, will sign a letter of intent today to play baseball for Kansas University.

Simpson, a senior, has started for the Junior Blues the last three years. He batted .409 last season and was selected to the All-Centennial League’s second team.

Simpson likely will play third base or outfield at KU.

KU cross country signs three runners

Three runners have signed national letters of intent with Kansas University’s cross country team.

The three are: Colby Wissel, from Kearney (Neb.) High; Mica Land, from Andover High; and Cortney Jacobs, from Atlantic (Iowa) High.

Wissel won the Nebraska state title this year and posted the eighth-best senior mile time in the United States (4:14.27) and the sixth-best senior two-mile time in the country (9:06.29). He won the individual title at this year’s Rim Rock cross country meet and the two-mile race at the Kansas Relays.

Land posted personal-best times of 5:10.52 in the mile and 2:19.84 in the 800-meter run. Land won the 2003 Class 4A 800 title and finished second in the state 3,200.

Jacobs won the Iowa Class 2A state championship in the 200 and 400.

WSU to ink Charger

Carbondale — Santa Fe Trail High senior Rob Musgrave will sign a national letter of intent today to play baseball at Wichita State University. A 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher, Musgrave has compiled a 22-4 career record with the Chargers.
