The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will dedicate the Dick Harp Library in honor of the former Kansas University men’s basketball coach at 10 a.m. Thursday at the FCA World Headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.

Harp joined the FCA as managing director after serving as the Jayhawks’ head coach from 1956-1964. He was with FCA for 13 years, then spent four seasons as an assistant under Dean Smith at North Carolina.

One of Harp’s principal FCA duties was overseeing the construction of the organization’s headquarters building north of the Truman Sports Complex.

“Dick was a coach, teacher, mentor and servant with firm convictions,” said Dal Shealy, FCA president and CEO. “Because of his love for knowledge and his devotion to Jesus Christ, it seems only fitting that we have the Dick Harp Library in a prominent place for visitors to the building.”

Harp died March 18, 2000, in Lawrence at the age of 81. He and his wife Martha Sue retired here after his time at North Carolina. Mrs. Harp still lives in Lawrence.

Harp was a three-year regular at KU and co-captain of the 1940 NCAA finalist team.
