Sharpe sets record, hints at retirement

? Shannon Sharpe added another NFL record to his resume Sunday, then hinted at retiring.

Sharpe caught three touchdown passes in Denver’s 37-8 romp over the San Diego Chargers to set an NFL record for touchdown receptions by a tight end.

It gave him 61 TD catches for his career and moved him past Washington’s Jerry Smith, who held the record with 60.

He caught an 11-yard TD pass from Jake Plummer in the first quarter. He had a 26-yard scoring catch in the second quarter and another 26-yarder in the third quarter.

Sharpe already holds the NFL records for most receptions (794) and yards receiving (9,786) by a tight end.

“It’s nice to have all the records,” Sharpe said. “My name is in the record book, but I look at all the people who have been around me, starting with No. 7 (John Elway). There have been a lot of guys throwing me passes, and a lot of guys drawing up game plans for me.”

Sharpe, who caught seven passes for 101 yards, knew he was going to be the focus Sunday.

“During the week, I caught a lot of passes in practice,” he said. “All the defensive guys said, ‘Oh, they’re going to call your number this week.’ I said, ‘I hope so, because it’s the best I’ve felt this year.’

“It’s the first time I’ve been healthy. Early on, it was my back. And then in Week Four I hurt my knee. But during the bye week I got away from football and got some massages, and I came back on Monday and felt good.”

Sharpe, 35, said he already has made a decision about his future. While declining to be specific, he indicated he was leaning toward retirement.

Asked after a game like this if he felt he might have two or three more years left, Sharpe said, “No. When I have a game like this, I say I’ve got two or three more months. I just don’t want to hold on too long. I’ve always told myself that I’m going to leave one year too early instead of one year too late.

“I’ve made a decision. But I did tell Mike (coach Mike Shanahan) that if he didn’t throw me the football, I was going to play a couple of more years.”
