Jewell trips Baker in OT, 28-27

? Nobody on the Baker sideline possibly could have imagined the Wildcats would lose their Senior Day game when they were ahead 21-7 after three quarters.

Not considering the Wildcats (4-6) had outgained William Jewell 375-221 at that point. Not after they’d turned the ball over twice in the third quarter and not been hurt on the scoreboard. And certainly not after junior tailback Jon Reeves tied the longest rushing play in school history.

But it happened. The Cardinals (3-7) scored 21 unanswered points and blocked Baker’s extra-point attempt in overtime to seal the deal.

William Jewell 28, Baker 27.

“It seemed like any mistakes killed both teams,” said Baker senior linebacker Oliver Kurtz, who led the Wildcats with 15 tackles. “We just made more, and they capitalized on them.”

The loss spoiled a banner day for Reeves, whose 224-yard performance was the 15th-best single-game effort in school history. He also wrapped up the Heart of America Conference rushing title with 1,493 yards this season.

Reeves broke a 96-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter that seemed to put the game out of reach.

“We’ve had some good blocking all season,” Reeves said. “I’ve got a great fullback and a great offensive line. The good thing is that we’ll all be coming back together next year because we’ve really jelled this season.”

Two Jewell penalties prolonged the Wildcats’ 82-yard opening drive, which Reeves capped with a five-yard plunge. Reeves broke a 25-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter after getting a great block from Justin Bloomer.

Baker University defensive linemen Antoniyo Solomon, left, and Luke Thompson, right, wrap up William Jewell quarterback Johnny Strada. William Jewell defeated the Wildcats, 28-27, in overtime Saturday in Baldwin.

Ryan Hartman’s 17-yard touchdown run cut the Cardinals’ deficit to seven just before halftime.

Jewell added a pair of field goals on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter, however, and pulled within eight.

Then Jewell’s Josh Ellis recovered a pooch kick. Sherman Wilson found Bret Jones open in the corner of the end zone five plays later. The pair combined again for the two-point conversion and tied the game at 21.
