Bechard bags 100th win as KU volleyball sweeps Iowa State

? Kansas University’s volleyball team swept Iowa State Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum to give coach Ray Bechard his 100th win at KU. The Jayhawks (18-9, 10-6 Big 12 Conference) defeated the Cyclones (11-17, 3-12) by scores of 30-16, 30-19 and 30-27.

The win over the Cyclones marked KU’s 10th conference win of the season, tying last year’s total for the most in school history. In his sixth season, Bechard becomes the fourth KU volleyball coach to reach the 100-victory mark.

“Reaching the 100-win milestone is nice, but most important is the 10th conference win,” Bechard said. “I just hope the next 100 come a lot quicker.”

KU jumped to a 12-4 lead in Game One as Josi Lima dominated at the net, and Iowa State struggled without setters Lindsey Chapman and Amanda Craig. The Jayhawks notched a .406 hitting percentage and led by as many as 14 en route to a 30-16 win.

The Jayhawks held onto to another commanding lead in Game Two, rallying behind Andi Rozum and Ashley Michaels’ blocking and hitting. The KU reserves, including freshmen Megan Hill and Dani Wittman, took the court in Game Two and propelled the Jayhawks to a 30-19 win.

The Cyclones, who hit just .077 in the first two games, took a 6-1 lead in Game Three. KU regained an 11-10 advantage and never looked back. Michaels recorded KU’s final kill of the match to close the game 30-27.

Sarah Rome and Michaels led KU with 14 kills each while Lima added 13 kills and a match-high 14 digs. Lindsey Morris added five kills, and Jordan Garrison had three. Rozum notched a match-high 37 assists and added eight digs and two blocks. Libero Jill Dorsey tallied nine digs as all 13 Jayhawks saw action.

“It was good to get a 3-0 win on the road,” Bechard said. “Iowa State had to make a few adjustments offensively and we still did things well on our side of the net.”

The Jayhawks will continue their Big 12 road trip Wednesday when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the No. 10 Huskers. Match time is 7 p.m.
