Texas Tech warms up, beats up on UTSA

? Once No. 10 Texas Tech started moving around a bit, the Raiders were fine.

Looking a little rusty at times in their season opener, the Raiders closed each half with a burst and beat Texas-San Antonio, 76-48, Friday night in the opening round of the preseason women’s NIT.

“Their team won the Southland Conference last year, and they came in here with nothing to lose,” Tech coach Marsha Sharp said. “I was pleased that we were able to generate some offense in timely spots.”

The most timely may have been at the end of the first half, when Tech scored the final 11 points for a 32-20 lead. The Raiders closed the second half on a 16-2 run.

“I thought that as we went through it, we got a little better, and I think we’ll continue to see that happen,” Sharp said.

Jia Perkins led Tech with 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Alesha Robertson added 14 points for Tech, and Casey Jackson and Jolee Ayers-Curry had 11 apiece.

“Obviously, they did a great job defensively, and we had a little trouble getting into a groove,” Ayers-Curry said. “We missed some shots and got a little frustrated, but we had some people make some big plays to fix that.”

Lacy Mingee led Texas-San Antonio with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kim Reed finished with 13 points and was 3-of-4 on three-pointers. She also had five assists.
