Timberwolves top Bulls in OT

Sprewell comes through in Minnesota's 92-89 win

? After being on the losing end of a couple of close games, Latrell Sprewell is going to savor this victory.

Sprewell forced overtime with a three-pointer, then scored four points in the extra period to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 92-89 victory Thursday night over the Chicago Bulls.

“Whenever you win and are able to knock down shots like that, it just feels good,” Sprewell said. “We have been on the other side of games like this, and it just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. So to actually come out and win one, it means a lot.”

But the Timberwolves’ enthusiasm was tempered by concern for Bulls guard Jamal Crawford, who was taken to a local hospital as a precaution after landing on the back of his head in the fourth quarter.

Crawford was conscious and able to move and talk after he fell, and Bulls trainer Fred Tedeschi was cautiously optimistic about his prognosis. Crawford was undergoing a battery of tests at Rush Presbyterian to make sure nothing was wrong.

“When something like that happens, you immediately think the worst,” said Jalen Rose, Crawford’s closest friend on the Bulls. “Fortunately for us and fortunately for Jamal, that didn’t happen. … We did get word he’s doing fine.”

Sprewell finished with a season-high 27 points, and also had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists. Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Scottie Pippen had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Bulls, who dropped to 1-5 at home. Rose added 25 points, but he blew a chance to clinch the victory in regulation.

Fouled by Garnett with 24 seconds left, Rose — the team’s best free-throw shooter — made the first shot to give the Bulls an 82-79 lead. But he missed the second shot, meaning Minnesota only needed a three.

Chicago's Kirk Hinrich, left, knocks the ball out of the hand of Minnesota's Sam Cassell. Hinrich, a Kansas University product, scored four points in the Bulls' 92-89 overtime loss Thursday night in Chicago.

Mavs 97, Rockets 86

Dallas — Antoine Walker had 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists to lead to Dallas past Houston. Walker scored seven of his points in a game-turning 22-8 run in the third quarter that put Dallas ahead to stay as the Mavericks snapped the Rockets’ four-game winning streak.

A free throw by Walker with 7:54 left started the run and put Dallas ahead 58-55. By the time he hit a long jumper 41/2 minutes later, the Mavericks led 73-63. Dallas has won five in a row against its instate rival.

Blazers 112, Kings 110, OT

Portland, Ore. — Zach Randolph has 28 points and 14 rebounds, and Portland climbed out of a 24-point deficit to beat Sacramento in overtime.

The Blazers rallied to tie it five times in the second half but could not take over the lead until overtime.

Damon Stoudamire’s reverse layup put Portland ahead for the first time in the game, 109-107 with 3:23 left in the extra period, before Rasheed Wallace followed up with a decisive dunk.
