Jayhawks shut down Sooners

Defensive-minded Kansas sweeps overmatched Oklahoma squad

Apparently Kansas University’s volleyball team misunderstood the saying, “Boomer Sooner.”

They must have thought it said “Boom The Sooners,” because that’s what the Jayhawks did Wednesday at Horejsi Center, pummeling Oklahoma, 3-0 (30-14, 30-21, 30-16).

From Josi Lima’s thunderous kill to open Game One, to Ashley Bechard and Ashley Michaels’ combination block that closed Game Three, the outcome of the 75-minute match never was in doubt.

Every Jayhawk played as KU snapped its streak of five straight five-game matches and got a much-welcomed early end to its night.

“I told the team, ‘We might need to practice because usually we play an hour longer than that, so I’m worried about us losing our edge,'” KU coach Ray Bechard joked after the match.

“That’s exactly what we needed. In fairness to Oklahoma, they’ve got a couple key kids out, but a lot of it had to do with us being very aware defensively.”

Sure enough, the Jayhawks’ defense made it extremely difficult for the Sooners to find breathing room, let alone score points. Kansas out-blocked, out-dug and out-hustled Oklahoma. Joanna Schmitt (11 kills) was the only Sooner to record more than six kills.

Kansas University middle blocker Josi Lima (10) tips the ball past Oklahoma defenders Joanna Schmitt and Jennifer Adams. The Jayhawks swept the Sooners, 3-0, Wednesday at Horejsi Center.

Meanwhile, Kansas logged its second-best team hitting percentage of the conference season at .358, just shy of the .381 it hit at OU last month.

Michaels and Sarah Rome led KU with 11 and 10 kills, while Lima and Lindsey Morris each added eight.

Despite the glitzy stats, the Jayhawks weren’t flawless. Bechard said his team struggled with poor passing early in Game One, which resulted in a 13-11 deficit. They got the passing problems sorted out quickly, however, and closed the game with a 19-1 run because of stellar serving from Rome and Abbie Jacobson.

“We really did come out with a spark,” Michaels said. “It just didn’t necessarily show the first 15 points, but we did. We came out and were like ‘We’re going to play hard and we’re going to try to play as tough as we can to get this done in three.'”

A slow start to Game Two was quickly forgotten when a 10-1 run put it out of reach. An 11-4 run midway through Game Three turned it into another rout and Bechard cleared his bench.

For the first time in three weeks, the Jayhawks didn’t go to five games and went home early.

“Coach was like, ‘Maybe we should go run or lift weights,'” Jacobson said, debating what to do with the extra free time. “I’m like ‘No, probably not.’ I don’t know what I’m gonna do. Just relax probably, and enjoy my Wednesday night. I’m never home by this time.”
