Shooting kills hunter

Parks officials identified a 47-year-old Freeport man on Monday as the hunter who died on the first day of pheasant season after an apparent accidental shooting.

Donald Bonham was shot Saturday near the Harper-Sumner county line, said Val Jansen of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. He was flown to a Wichita hospital, where he died after surgery, Jansen said.

The accident happened as Bonham placed his rifle into or took it out of a pickup truck. The weapon went off, hitting Bonham in the stomach.

A Parsons-based Army Reserve unit has received orders to prepare for mobilization as part of the U.S. military operations in Iraq.

Capt. Jason Sears said the 243rd Army Reserve Supply and Service Company was placed on alert Thursday and received its mobilization orders Saturday. The unit will continue daily training until the unit is ordered to deploy, likely in January, Sears said.
